I'm crazy about steak tartare. Hard to find in US restaurants anymore, so I have to fill up on it during my European vacays. Hard to describe why I like it. The pure beefy flavor, smooth texture, spicyness when requested or it's made tableside. With its unavailability so widespread, imagine the thrill I felt reading about the Cannibal Sandwich holiday tradition in Wisconsin. A product of German immigrants (in Germany, it can be either beef or pork served with raw onions on a roll or bread, and it is called "Mett"), it is served in many homes for the holidays, each family adding their own special touches to the flavor. There are a handful of restaurants in Wisconsin that serve it year-round, and the state's oldest general store, Kuhtz's, is one of them. It's on the menu every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and is served on marble rye with raw white onion and pepperjack cheese, if you like. Seasoning is up to you. I was delighted with the flavor and value. The kitchen at the store is located at the back of the store side of the building (there is also a bar side which features a lot of traditional bar games, as well), and you order at the counter and they'll bring your order out to you when ready. They offer a pretty full menu of bar food and a revolving list of specials and soups. It was a pleasant day for a drive-thru in the Wisconsin countryside and a great lunch.

Hands down the best bar in lake country. Great bartenders. Family owned. One of the few places I can think of outside of monroe to get a liver sausage sandwich. Really checks all the boxes. Never had a problem sitting in that bar and finding a friendly person to talk to.

Very cool bar with a general store attached. It is definitely a small town feel and vibe at Kuhtz's general store. Very friendly people and bartenders. Great drink deals, usually a bogo on most drinks.
